Wakey Wakey!

Do you regularly wake up feeling like the walking dead? Are you sick of the sight of that obnoxious alarm clock you wake up next to every morning? Do you regularly find yourself stumbling downstairs towards the kettle murmuring something along the lines of 'WHHHY?’? Are you offended by cockerels?

If you answered yes to any of the above, I’d like to diagnose you as one of the millions of sufferers of what I call 'morningitis'. As a light sleeper myself I started testing various methods to help with that after alarm feeling of dread. Not a morning person either? Read on.

Included here are some slightly scientific suggestions and personal ramblings about how to wake up feeling refreshed. They may just turn you from Jeckle and Hyde into that marvellously, chirpy morning beater! After all, the early bird catches the worm (scoff, scoff).

How to Wake up Feeling Refreshed (It is possible)

1. Exercise. It’s a well-known fact that exercise has many health benefits. Nothing new there. If like me you have a seemingly vast amount of energy, get down the gym get involved in a local club/class, or put those dusty running shoes on! Benefits of exercise partly aid a good night’s sleep. I personally fall into a deep sleep after playing sport, or going for a run and generally wake up feeling refreshed. However there are certain measures to take after completing heavy bouts of exercise.

If you overdo it, exercise can have the opposite effect to how you wake up. After a hard workout your body needs to repair itself. Muscle fibres are damaged, electrolytes lost through sweat and large amounts of energy may be expelled. If you do not cool down properly, feed your body with the nutrition it needs or not rehydrate properly after a session, you may even wake up feeling more tired than usual.

2. Get fresh air asap! On the rare occasion drag myself out of bed, put on running shoes and get going, a feeling of well-being and contentment arises along with my heart rate. First thing morning exercise gives your world a whole new perspective. You early birds'll know what I’m talking about! After exercising early, a focus comes over me, I have more energy for the days tasks and generally have a more positive outlook. Plus, I feel a lot more tired earlier in the night, helping me to wake up early the next morning again.

3. Wrap things up before you go to bed. Whether it be stuff around the house or work you have brought home with you, finish it before you go to sleep. I sometimes find myself waking up in the night unnecessarily thinking or even dreaming about things I should have done, or need to do. Writing a list of what needs to be taken care of the next day seems to put my mind at rest. Being organised might help you wake up feeling refreshed, ready for the day ahead with you to do list ready to go.

4. Yoga. I recently read an article here on hubpages that suggested Yoga to aid you falling asleep. Having never practiced yoga before I thought I’d give it a go. What did I have to lose? 15 minutes a night I carried out two or three of the suggested exercises including breathing and relaxation methods. Relaxing the body and mind before going to bed led me into falling into a deep sleep, sometimes finding it difficult to wake up! I love hubpages, you can learn so much here.

5. Caffeine and a good breakfast. Millions swear by it! Caffeine in small doses is also reported to have other health benefits. Personally, as soon as I wake up a coffee isn’t far behind. Also a pint of water to rehydrate and flush out toxins from the system seems to help. A good nutritious breakfast will also get you pumped for the day ahead. A mixture of fruit, yoghurt and carbohydrates in the form of cereals or bread usually works wonders for me. Bananas are a great source of natural sugars which up your energy levels as they are broken down and absorbed quickly.
